Bluebird's a sideways move - Smith

You`ve just got to love Tommy Smith after the in-demand Watford playmaker insisted he wasn`t keen on leaving Watford in the transfer window… but we hope he has no plans to holiday in the Cardiff area any time soon!

The Hornets wideman has said that he prompted the board to turn down a £1.6m enquiry from the Bluebirds by stressing that a move to Ninian Park was a "sideways step".

Smith, who is still fearful he may have to uproot his family and move on in the summer to balance the books, told the W`Observer "I didn`t feel Cardiff at this particular time was the right move for me. If I did move then I would want to make a move which was a forward step."

Dave Jone`s Bluebirds might be 5th in the league - bang slap in the middle of the promotion race - and a modest 21 points better off than Watford but Smudger clearly isn`t convinced that they have what it takes to get to the Premier League.

Doing his best to emulate Anne Robinson by having a pop at the Welsh, Smithy added "It is quite hard mid-season, in January now, to guess who is going up or is going to have a bad run so it is hard".

And if that wasn`t enough, the Vicarage Road fans favourite went on to state "I especially didn`t want to be forced into a sideways move"…

Rock on Tommy.
