Watford miss out on Beckford
Watford have missed out on signing Jermaine Beckford from Wealdstone United as Leeds United agreed an undisclosed fee for the much sought after striker.
Beckford, who was also a target for Yeovil, Brentford, Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Southampton and Charlton, spent a week on trial with the Golden Boys and it had been hoped that the twenty-two year-old would make the short trip to Watford on a permanent deal.
However, the striker, who has scored thirty-five goals in forty games for Ryman Premier outfit Wealdstone, has opted to sign for Kevin Blackwell's Leeds. The fee is believed to be in the region of £50,000 which Wealdstone accepted from Yeovil Town earlier in the season.
Beckford follows in the footsteps of Stuart Pearce and Watford-born Vinny Jones who both started their careers at Wealdstone and then progressed to league clubs.
