Hero Lee lucky not to see red - Aidy

Watford`s spot-on specialist penalty stopper, Richard Lee, was lucky not be dismissed during the 3-0 win over Southampton at St Mary`s according to Hornets chief Aidy Boothroyd.

Lee saved 2 spot kicks within the first 18 minutes at St Mary`s but was fortunate to still be on the field after clattering Saints striker David McGoldrick to pick up a yellow card from ref Trevor Kettle in just the 3rd minute.

Even Hornets chief Aidy Boothroyd admitted "I think [Lee] was lucky to still be on the pitch. I`ve seen referee`s give sendings off for that but I think Wardy and Bromby were just level with him which made Trevor [Kettle`s] make the decision he did…"

And despite the ref`s efforts to make amends for not flashing the red by booking the entire Hornets midfield in just under 6 minutes, the official`s decision sat well with the Watford boss.

Boothroyd went on to heap praise on his at-the-double goalkeeping, insisting "Richard has stood up and won us the points today definitely"…

Well that, and the inability of Southampton`s strikers to cows rawhide with a banjo from 12 yards…

Maybe our supporters (and more importantly Aidy) will recognise Richard Lee is a good keeper after this. The clean sheet is most welcome, but our defence will have to be sharper to repeat the feat against Cardiff.
