Star snubs Sir Alex for Watford

Watford legend (and the best centre half ever to don the yellow shirt) John McClelland has revealed he turned down the advances of Sir Alex Ferguson to sign for the Hornets!

…and few players will be able to make such a claim that`s for sure.

McClellend was snapped up by Graham Taylor from Glasgow Rangers just 6 months after Watford had reached the FA Cup Final in 1984, with the Northern Ireland defender refusing to even look at a contract on offer from Sir Alex!

Now that`s loyalty for you.

Speaking to the cracking www.watfordlegends.com website, McClelland stated "…Watford were waiting to meet me at Glasgow Airport. I met Eddie Plumley and Graham Taylor there, and Alex Ferguson from Aberdeen was waiting 5 doors away along the corridor".

Big Mac added "I told Graham [Taylor] that I was happy to sign for him but I wanted to see Alex out of courtesy to say no to him".

And McClelland, who went on to be a loyal servant for the Hornets turning in over 185 performances, also revealed that Ferguson played the 'money card` in an attempt to drag him away from Watford.

He added "I went to see Alex and told him that I was going to sign for Watford. He said 'just have a look at this contract. You will see that I am offering you a lot more money than Watford will".

"Alex Ferguson was disappointed"…

Ah, those were the days, when footballers showed a bit of loyalty and weren`t all motivated by the cold hard buck.
