Demoted Halsey gets Hornets nod

Demoted Halsey gets Hornets nod

'Demoted` Premier League ref Mark Halsey has been put in charge of Watford`s clash with Sheffield United tomorrow - just 2 games after starring in the highly controversial John Terry - Keith Hackett - Fergie love triangle over 'that` red card!

In a week where a reffing useless decision at Vicarage Road has been subject of intense media scrutiny, the bods in the Football League would have been well advised to go for a 'safe` low key appointment at Bramall Lane tomorrow.

No such luck - as the appointment of demoted Premier League "crap ref" (Chris Coleman`s words and not necessarily those of VitalWatford) Halsey goes to proveā€¦

Either someone at the FA either has a really wicked sense of humour or those misfits at Soho Square have taken a real disliking to Aidy Boothroyd`s Hornets.

The Hertfordshire born (yes, 'Hertfordshire`) man in black is approaching 10 years in the big league but has been steeped in controversy throughout his whole career.

Halsey was last week 'demoted` to the depths of a Div 2 local derby between Chester and Shrewsbury after the John Terry red card fiasco against Man City, then awarded a penalty at the Diva Stadium - despite the fact the linesman flagged for a goal kick.

He was also caught drinking with Man City fans after taking charge of their Play Off Final win against Gillingham (after City equalized 5 minutes into injury time) and admitted to "bowing to player pressure" in reversing a penalty award in a Fulham-Arsenal clash a few years back.

All in all then, a pretty strange appointment for a notoriously 'warm` affair at Bramall Lane.

Well he's registered to the Lancashire FA, supports QPR, trains with Bolton but was born in Hertfordshire (Welyn Garden City) and also played for St Albans earlier in his career....Dr Watford - vice president of the Mark Halsey Fan Club!

I don't understand why the FA think a rubbish elite ref is suitable for the football league...surely a bad ref is a bar ref full stop. In many respects, its harder to officiate the rough and tumble of the Championship compared to the Premier as the top div is nowhere near as physical as the lower leagues...media pressure though ain't it?
