'Watford were strangers' - Boothroyd

Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd publicly stated he was in 2 minds as to "what Wednesday team was going to turn up on the day" but it was the Hornets who failed to show in South Yorkshire.

The Watford chief was quick to scorn his players after the 2-0 loss at Sheffield Wednesday insisting "we looked like strangers", "were second best from start to finish"- all wrapped up in a horrible ball of averageness.

Boothroyd blasted "We were well beaten. We looked a very, very average side and we`re a lot better than that…You`ve got to be tough to beat and we have been that, and you have to be resilient and we`ve been that too - but we were neither".

The Hornets chief continued his rant by adding "We looked like strangers and it`s rare that a Watford side plays as bad as that. They [Wednesday] out-scrapped us in every department and you have to give credit where credit is due".

Even Owls boss Brian Laws expressed his surprise that the "expected bombardment" didn`t materialize - a statement of fact backed up by Boothroyd.

Aidy added "…we didn't give them anything to worry about, we didn't give the goalkeeper anything to worry about and we were very average today in our defending and attacking.'

'The best teams can play badly and get results, whereas we've only played badly today.

I can understand and accept a defeat - that will happen, but the manner of this one is alarming and suggests that there is still a hangover from last season's failure. To suggest we were like strangers is a nonsense and it sounds more like a motivational problem and we just failed to get going to me. Let's hope we get it right on Tuesday night against a rock-bottom Plymouth side who will certainly be fighting for their lives. Match theim for effort and we will win the game.
