'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Safety first for 'cotton wool' Watford

After promising to 'wrap his Watford stars up in cotton wool' and insisting that this season`s objective is 'safety first' Aidy Boothroyd will have welcomed the international break with open arms.

The Hornets early season fitness has read like an extras list for the cast of Casualty with the likes of Robinson`s arm, Jobi`s thigh, Lee`s knee and the mysterious case of Hoskins groin dotted all over the treatment room…

So Aidy Boothroyd can`t wait for a few weeks off to let his wounded troops recover.

He told the Watford Observer 'We`ve had a lot of injured players and people carrying bumps and bruises and they need rest. We`ve got a break now and there`s a lot for me to think about'.

And after seeing the likes of Smith, Harley and Sadler all struggling at one point or another in the opening 6 games, he added 'We`ve got to make sure we`re the very best at getting people fit, keeping them fit and, if they`re not fit, making sure they recover quickly enough so we can keep out best 11, our best 15, right'.

(so, its not just Rasiak who`s had to 'shoulder` the blame for keeping the Vicarage Road medical team busy…)

Keeping players fit will be critical this year with a smaller squad, I've seen no recent news of Williams - what's happening?

A spate of injuries will knock confidence in the team, with the squad so small, we could well be in short supply of players come winter!

Williams has gone backwards by all accounts - took a knock in preseason and is 'miles away from being ready' according to Aidy...Shame as he is the lynchpin to the new passing game in my book.

WFC way of handling players with knee injuries over the last 20 years has never been that great! but with the people they have in place now, you would hope they know what they are doing.

Thanks. I'd heard about the setback in pre-season but have heard nothing since and there's no mention of the injury on the WFC website, makes you wonder .....

It's not always about keeping the players fit... They can pick up a injuries anywhere... It's just a case of hoping that the injuries that do crop up aren't season finishing one's... Our squad isn't that much smaller now... The wadge bill is but not really team players... Hendo, *Shittu, Kabba, Moses all out.. Harley, GR, in... That's just two less... The quality of the players in reserve have gone down...
