Darlo have license to thrill

Darlo boss Dave Penney should know all the tricks up the sleeves of Watford gaffer Aidy Boothroyd at Vicarage Road tonight…

…after all the 2 managers worked closely with each other on their UEFA Pro licenses as part of the FA Class of 2005.

And it seems that the Quakers gaffer could play Boothroyd at his own game by playing a host of fringe players in tonight`s Carling Cup 2nd round tie.

Penney told the official Darlo site "People on the fringes of the side are desperate for a game. We might use [the Watford] match to give people games and to help some get fitness too".

Yet the former Doncaster boss is still expecting a tough ol time, insisting "Watford were a Premier League team a couple of seasons ago and they`re going to be challenging at the top of the Championship this season so obviously it`s going to be a difficult, tough game for us"

Obviously.

seems to me that there were less fans there than the last cup game, the heavy handiness of the stewards leaves a lot to be desired! thought they would want to keep hold of the true fans.

Watford have only every had a small hardcore fan base... That's why we need to play the type of football to draw in the next generation of fan to watch the Hornets... It's hard when there is so many other things and teams to watch... Watford should lead the way in offering kids for a quid every home match... In the long run we will gain... Trouble is short term is what everyone expects...

we were getting 6 to 7 thousand on average before GT in the fourth Division, which may seem a small fan base, but when you considered what other clubs around us were getting, it was quite large. as GT once said, we are to close to london and watford as a population is not that vast, so attracting kids from further a field is gonna be hard, as they would want to go to the premiership teams with better stadiums. Success brings the crowds in, offering kids for a quid, is a great idea, but the economics do not stand up! the club has no money now, so they are not gonna do that. life is short term in todays climate, robbing peter to pay paul and with a 4 million pound bank loan just taken out which has to be paid in Jan, would not be suprised if we lose another player before the dealine. so short term is survival i am afraid to say, if the club get new owners then perhaps they can then look long term! but lets just make sure we have club we can keep still visit
