Jewell: Duke is summer's best signing

Derby County boss Paul Jewell has claimed that the season-long loan signing Nathan Ellington from Watford can be the Championship`s best piece of pre-season business…despite the substantial loan fee and massive wages.

The former Bradford and Wigan gaffer told the official Rams club site "Nathan has the potential to be the best signing of the summer in this division. At his best he is the most lethal striker in the Championship…".

Of Ellington`s attributes, Jewell added "He has everything; he`s powerful, quick, great in the air and a magnificent finisher. I can`t wait to work with him again and get him back to producing the type of football I know he can".

Ellington, who led the line for Jewell`s Wigan revolution, makes the switch from Vicarage Road just 7 months after signing on the dotted on line ona £3.25m deal from West Brom.

For those not blinded by the achievement of promotion over three years ago, I want to say, I have lost faith in Boothroyd. He's got it right by getting shot of Ellington, but on loan? What? Get rid of him, not give them the chance to send him back. I read on Sky Sports it's potentially on a free transfer he will sign. Mad, nothing back for a 3.25million player. SORT IT OUT BOOTHROYD.

wfc123 - What we don't know is the 'substantial loan fee' - I reckon the loan fee alone is going to be circa £1.5m (and it also gets Duke off the wage bill @ £1m per annum)...

Why would they pay a million and a half for a years loan when they could add an extra 500k-ish to thafee and him theirs outright? I understand the merits of try before you buy, but surely they wouldn't pay ove a million to just loan him in!

Nathen is the type of player who needs service. At Watford he didn't get that much. The lack of creative midfield players at Watford is the main reason we lacked the cuttin' edge last season. Just bypassing the midfield by lumpin' it up front doesn't work. In the last three months of the season Danny *Shittu was the most dangerous goal threat we had. Bottom line is we sold too many good players & bought what we didn't need. Why did Boothroyd change the back two of Jay & Danny. The two were playing wonderfuly. Plus why did Aidy sell one aging midfielder (Mahon) only just to buy another. (Eustice) We need to ship out the losers & start from scatch. Next season will be hard to survive in the Championship. I pray we do better. ( 1881 Forever )

So much potential, didn't do enough for you really this season. No quality delivery once Johnson left.

Spot-on 1881. Eustace started well, but since has not delivered, he is becoming more and more of a liability with every game that goes by.
