'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Jay not Ok

Since being named club captain last December, Jay DeMerit has hardly been first-choice skipper at Vicarage Road.

Injury has largely hampered his campaign, as has the signing of Leigh Bromby, but since his return at the turn of the year John Eustace, Darius Henderson, Richard Lee and Dan Shittu have all taken the armband. Indeed, upon arrival Adrian Boothroyd offered debutant Eustace the armband, but he declined. The former Stoke 'skipper has since taken the responsibility.

DeMerit was finally back in the first team on Saturday but once again, Eustace was the man in armband despite DeMerit's presence.

The Yankee defender has remained hush on the subject, until now:

'I do not think it has ironed itself out yet but that is between me and the manager.

'It's not time to be selfish. There has to be unity and whether we agree or not he makes the decisions.'

Everyone had their say and there is not supposed to be one leader,' he added. 'There are 22 out there it's the only way to get things done.

'It's not always going to be rosy and we have all got things wrong. But we need to stick together.'

Valid points Jay, but as far as I'm concerned and have repeatedly said, 'club captain' is captain of the team unless injured or suspended.

Like Fabio Capello, Adrian Boothroyd doesn't appear to grasp the importance of captaincy in England. Not that the two are on par in managerial skills!

I don't think Eustace should be captain. I think the captain should be at the club for longer. Henndo or Jay should be the man. (1881)
